Women in Business Spotlight – My Gifting Sister

Next on the Women in Business Spotlight is the business, My Gifting Sister. I had the opportunity to speak with one of the owners, Cynthia and learn the amazing story behind the business. I met Cynthia through a mutual coaching group that we are in. Yes, mentors need mentors!

How did your business start?

My Gifting Sister was started by Cynthia and her two sisters, Veronica and Martha. Their company, My Gifting Sister, originated from a sweet story among the three of them. They try to get together once or twice a year for a sister weekend. They meet in different cities to explore, have fun, and of course spend quality time with each other. Some of their Sister Weekends have included Barcelona, San Diego, and recently traveled to Cabo! During the sister weekend, they like to bring each other a little gift so they can have the gift as a memory they can cherish from their trips and adventures together. Of course, as the pandemic ceased many travels the sister weekends were put on pause for the time being.

During the pandemic, the younger sister needed help with a gift for a friend and said to Cynthia, “you’re really good at picking out gifts” and recommended she turn her talent into a business. Cynthia was laid off from her job as a flight attendant so she began thinking “how can I turn my skill into a business.” Eventually an idea came to light and she thought why don’t we do a gift box so other women can also have their own gifting “sister” moments.

They began selling on a deal site, Pick Your Plum, to start small and connected with a coaching course with Alison J Prince to gain confidence to fully launch the business this year.

What does My Gifting Sister sell?

My Gifting Sister sells gift boxes with items like jewelry, lotion and more. The items are usually from their fellow friends’ businesses so in turn they not only have a really cool gift box for their customers, but also share and promote their friends' businesses. Talk about a win-win-win!

Their gift boxes usually carry a seasonal theme gift box item with their current box being their Sister Spring Box. The box includes a beautiful sterling silver infinity necklace from Glass Palace Arts, natural lavender goat milk lotion by Simply Daisy, and vanilla fleur shea butter soap by Soap and Paper Factory. The box has a few extra goodies as well that include a soap bag, cozy socks, and a stretchy metal bracelet. It’s beautifully packaged and ready for sharing! They plan on creating a summer box that would have different items to highlight other friends’ businesses. They also offer other accessories on their website and can be ordered as add-ons!

What makes your business different?

Their boxes have hand-picked items of businesses they collaborate with to help promote and support those businesses as well. They want to provide quality products in their gift boxes that would be a gift any sister, friend, or mother would love to have and be inspired on their next moment together.

Who is someone that inspires you for your entrepreneurial journey and why?

Cynthia is inspired by Alison J Prince, a former junior high school teacher who built several multi-million-dollar online businesses. She created Pick Your Plum and sold it, among other businesses she created along with an online coaching program. Cynthia is inspired by Alison because she feels like a sister and is very approachable through her coaching group. The group provides a comfortable atmosphere and help along the way to start and grow the business.

What advice would you give to an aspiring entrepreneur?

Do your homework and know that it’s possible. Join a coaching group as well, as it helps bring confidence to build the business with a community that is uplifting. Also, be patient and don’t give up! Businesses take time to build and know that everyone goes at their own pace.
