How to Create a Product in Shopify

Embarking on the journey of starting an online store offers various hosting options, such as Wix, Weebly, Shopify, and Squarespace. Having experienced platforms like GoDaddy, Wix, Weebly, and Shopify, each has its merits, but my preferred choice for an ecommerce store is Shopify. Known for its user-friendly interface, drag-and-drop options, and a plethora of apps that seamlessly integrate with your store, Shopify simplifies the process of setting up an online business. In today's blog, we'll delve into a step-by-step guide on how to create a product in Shopify.

Initially, it's crucial to note that you should already possess a Shopify store; however, if you're a novice, we'll cover that topic in a subsequent blog post. This particular post focuses solely on the process of product creation, assuming you already have an active Shopify account and store.

For those engaged in dropshipping or utilizing a Print on Demand supplier, product creation often occurs within the supplier's app. Subsequently, the product is seamlessly integrated into your store and can be modified post-integration. While this aspect falls outside the scope of the current blog post, rest assured that the forthcoming instructions will guide you in editing your products effectively.

Step 1: Accessing the Product Section

Upon logging into your Shopify admin page, navigate to the left-side panel, where you'll find a menu with options like Home, Orders, and Products. Click on "Products."

The Product Screen should now be showing below where you can create a product, export products, import products, and other actions.

Step 2: Adding a Product

Once in the Products section, locate the "ADD A PRODUCT" button and click on it.

Step 3: Product Page Details

The Product Page is where the creative process begins. Here's a breakdown of the key components:

  • Title and Description:

    • Create a compelling title for your product.

    • Craft a detailed description, including sizing information, product details, and options. Customize the text with font changes, color adjustments, and multimedia additions (if your plan permits).

  • Media Images:

    • Showcase your product with high-quality images.

  • Product Status and Channels:

    • Set the product's status as "Active" or "Draft."

      • Active – means it’s active on your sales channel and available for purchase

      • Draft – means the product is saved but not yet published for availability

    • Specify the channels where you want your product to be published, such as your online store, Google & Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms.

  • Organization:

    • Organize your product by assigning relevant categories.

  • Pricing and Inventory:

    • Set the product's price and compare price for sale items. Compare price would be if the item is on sale. If the product is on sale, put the Sale Price in the Price section and then the higher price (normal price) in the Compare Price section. Then on your store, the Compare Price section will be crossed out to show it’s on sale.

    • Input the cost per item, and let Shopify automatically calculate your net profit and profit margin.

    • Track inventory and specify locations.

  • Additional Information:

    • Include vendor details, categorize the product into collections such as “Women’s Shirts”, and add tags. A Collection will already need to be created and that is not covered in this section.

    • Choose the theme template for the product page. Often times, this will be a default product page unless you change it later to a customize product page.

  • Shipping and Variants:

    • Specify shipping requirements and input weight information.

    • Use Variants to provide options such as sizes or colors. If you do have multiple options, you can also input an image to match with that option so when someone purchases it, the image will coordinate with that option.

  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO):

    • Edit the search engine listing for optimal visibility in search results. This is the information that would show up in a Google search result.

  • Metafields:

    • After saving the product, use Metafields to store additional information about the product such as product, collection, and other owner types.

Step 4 Save and Publish

After inputting all relevant details, click "Save" in the lower right corner. Your product is now live and ready for purchase. Remember, you can always go back and edit as needed.

Congratulations! Your product is now seamlessly integrated into your Shopify store. This tutorial is designed to simplify the process of creating products, ensuring a smooth online selling experience. Feel free to explore additional features and continue refining your online store for optimal success. Happy selling!
